ESSEXVILLE, MI (WNEM) -

A local family is seeking help replacing their roof.

"We just go month by month and that's all we can do right now," Josh Schaefer said.

He and his family are struggling. Medical issues are keeping him from working and his Essexville home is in need of some important repairs.

"There's a lot of roof and it's going to take a lot of work to get it off and a new one on. And there's a few spots it's leaking. There's no flashing anywhere," Schaefer said.

With no paycheck coming in and three young children, the repairs have been getting put off. Schaefer said he hasn't had an income since last March and he has had to sell many personal items just to make ends meet.

"We've had to sell a lot of hunting stuff, a lot of toys I used to have. I just had a '67 Cougar I had to get rid of," he said.

Schaefer suffers from chronic migraines and high blood pressure, among other health issues. He is in the process of applying for disability - a situation he never guessed he would be in.

"They got me going in right now every two weeks to get that checked out and right now I'm 33. And that's just unheard of. I never expected to be in this boat," Schaefer said.

He is asking for help replacing his roof and his windows if possible. He said anything that will help lower his heating costs will help.

"Yeah, it's costing a lot more to heat the home because there's just so many leaks. We got vinyl windows and I have to plastic wrap them every year," Schaefer said.
