SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Wednesday was the annual Education Day Game at the Dow Event Center in Saginaw.

The game mixed the fun of a hockey game with the joy of learning. About 2,600 students from schools around Mid-Michigan attended as the Saginaw Spirit faced the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.

Team officials said the game is one of their favorite events of the year.

"It's so much fun. I mean, look at the smiles on the faces of the kids out here today," said Rick Riffel, director of sales and marketing for the team.

Riffel said the players feed off the energy in the arena.

"The noise is everything, the atmosphere. The players are very enthusiastic when this game comes about. They really look forward to playing in this one," Riffel said.

Even though the Spirit lost, they still gave it their best. Which was an important lesson for the students.

"I think we get to see the kids in an atmosphere outside of school where they are getting to do something different and how to behave and interact. It's just kind of a neat experience for everybody and the staff as well," said Christian Wiley, teacher.
