MIDLAND COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A child who went missing in Midland County has been found safely.

A massive search was launched after the 2-year-old boy disappeared at around 9:30 a.m. wearing only a diaper and with the family’s dog, a German Shepherd.

He disappeared from a residence on the 5800 block of West Bradford in Shepherd. The child was being watched by two relatives at the time, according to the Midland County Sheriff's Office.

The babysitters had put the child back to bed about 9:30 a.m. and then fell asleep, the sheriff's office said. They woke up about 10:30 a.m. and discovered the child was missing.

Multiple fire departments were assisting in the search

Garret Salter, a Midland County resident, said he found the child on his property, about a half mile from his home. He was smiling and waving near a tree line, Salter said.

"Because I do have a 2-year-old grandson. So when they told me a 2-year-old boy went missing, it just kinda went pew pew in my head. And there was no if, ands or buts about it," Salter said.

A search and rescue team, helicopter and a K9 unit were sent to look for the boy.

"Nobody asked me to do it, but I just told the wife, 'Hey, I'm going to go out and look in our woods,'" he said.

While searching Salter said he saw the police and dogs go to the right so he went the other way.

"And something just told me to look left," Salter said. "There he was. Climbing up a tree, the tree was you know on the ground and he's up in it. Only thing he had on was a diaper. I walked up there and he smiled and waved at me and I grabbed him and said, 'Man, everybody's looking for you.'"

Salter said he's not hero, he just did what any parent or grandparent would do for their kids.

The child was missing for about four hours.

The child was checked out by EMS and turned over to his parents.
