A 29-year-old North Branch man is dead after he was involved in a head-on collision Friday morning.

The accident happened at 10:15 a.m. on Burnside Road near Churchill Road in Lapeer County's Brown City.

James Schaffer, 29, was driving a 1998 Ford Expedition westbound when he crossed the center lane into the path of a freightliner semi traveling eastbound, the Lapeer County Sheriff's Office said.

The semi was driven by Bruce Pullman, 51, of Utica. He was delivering ice cream to a business in Yale at the time of the crash.

After the crash, the Ford Expedition departed the north side of the road and came to a rest on its side, the sheriff's office said.

Schaffer was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

The front axle of the semi broke during the collision and the vehicle same to a rest in the center of the road, the sheriff's office said.

Pullman was transported to McLaren in Lapeer for treatment. His injuries are non-life threatening.

The road was closed for four hours as officers investigated.

Investigators believe neither speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
