Send Santa to the Troops a success

Posted: Updated:

Travis George, co-founder of the Yellow Ribbon Guard, said he can’t tell the community “thank you” enough. Donations have poured in over the past few hours making this year’s Send Santa to the Troops a close call, but a success.

“Last night I was not feeling well at all.  The community has really stepped up. I think we’re going to send another hundred packages and it’s just amazing what has happened over the last 12-24 hours,” Travis said.

A total of 964 care packages were sent out to the troops.

Travis said donations to cover the cost of shipping were lower than expected, although there were some new costs.

“We found out last night that it’s actually 16 and some change to send some care packages, so that sent us into even more of a panic.”

But more than 100 volunteers showed up and played a big role in sending some holiday spirit to those who need it most.

You can still make a donation, and any money that is left-over from the Send Santa to the Troops program immediately goes into another care package fund for soldiers.

Melissa Alex, Co-Founder of the Yellow Ribbon Guard, said a program like this is essential to families and soldiers deployed during the holidays and throughout the year.

“I think it’s important because these men and women are away from their families during the holidays; so this is a just a little piece of home to let them know we care about them and we’re thinking about them and we appreciate their service.”
