MERRILL, MI (WNEM) -

A local school principal resigned before a board meeting could decide his fate, now a few more details surrounding the decision are coming to light.

Merrill schools hosted the meeting in the high school library Monday night.

Todd Barraco, middle and high school principal, voluntarily resigned prior to the meeting, according to Superintendent Sarah Kettelhohn. His resignation takes place immediately.

The separation was amicable according to Kettelhohn.

The position will temporarily be filled by the middle and high school counselor until at least the end of the school year.

Kettelhohn would not say what the issue was that lead to the move but said the matter was not criminal and did not put students in any danger.

The superintendent recommended the board should terminate Barraco's contract. That item was going to be discussed at Monday's meeting before Barraco resigned.

Barraco had been with the district since July 2015.

"I cannot discuss any of the reasons for the resignation," Kettlehohn said.

She said it was a personal issue and emphasized no criminal act took place and that Barraco's actions did not involve any students.

"Our attorney advises us to and I just think because it's a personal issue, I think it's for the privacy of both parties that it's just better not to discuss it," Kettlehohn said.
