LANSING, MI (AP) -

As you and your family prepare to hit the road there are a few things you need to know.

Thanksgiving is the second deadliest holiday in Michigan when it comes to traffic fatalities.

In 2014, Michigan drivers accounted for six of them during Thanksgiving weekend - the lowest number the state has seen in over 30 years.

In 2015, those numbers were up with 11 deaths reported as being related to distracted or impaired driving.

In an effort to keep your family safe, the Michigan State Police are starting their annual Operation C.A.R.E Traffic Safety Initiative.

Starting Wednesday, more officers will be on the road to keep an eye out for impaired driving, seat belt use, careless driving and speeding.

The amped up patrols will be in effect through Sunday.
