Runners burn calories before Thanksgiving feast

MIDLAND COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

When Thanksgiving dinner is just hours away a lot of us might skip breakfast and wait to eat as much as possible at dinner.

Some runners in Midland's Turkey Trot took a different approach, though, as they burned calories by running and worked up an appetite for a much earned turkey dinner.

"You got that right! See now I don't have to feel quite so guilty,” Paul Wykowski said.

Roast, turkeys and hams were soon devoured by Thursday’s runners. Except young Connor Welch who only wanted one thing when he crossed the finish line.

“Hotdogs!” he said.

Connor’s mother said rather than sleep in, they came out to run off some of the extra energy the kids had since they didn’t have school for the holiday.

Part of the Turkey Troy included a food drive for three family centers in Midland County.

A little more than 60 miles away in Flint was another big gathering of runners.

The 60th annual Turkey Trot at the Mott Park Golf Course brought participants of all ages.

Organizers said the event is popular because of the kinship it generates.

"It's a family tradition. Everybody that comes to this race comes in giant groups. And they're all out, you know, to have like a big family reunion," said an organizer.

The event was a benefit for the Flint YMCA's Summer Athletic Program.
