FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

As friends and family gathered on Thanksgiving, it's important to remember that not everyone can be home with their loved ones.

For first responders, it's just another day of serving their communities and answering calls for help.

Thanksgiving Day was another routine 24-hour shift for Flint firefighters, but not quite.

“Today is especially special just because of a close call that we had a couple of days ago,” Amy Rygwelski said.

The department is recovering from a Tuesday blaze at a city apartment complex that sent three firefighters the hospital.

“We work together so closely, you know. We truly love each other,” Rygwelski said.

Firefighters are used to working long shifts and eating together but on Thanksgiving everyone came to the station and shared one big bird.

“We had the turkey made by a company 'cause we couldn't depend on us cooking in case we get a fire,” District Commander Ramsey Clapper said.

Today, the different stations across the city met at station one for one a holiday pot luck dinner.

For firefighters, this was a meal with "second family” - a complete Thanksgiving dinner with turkey, macaroni and cheese, green bean casserole, gravy, cornbread, and pie.

“We coordinate to make sure we weren't having 15 pumpkin pies at the same time and no mashed potatoes,” Clapper joked.

In Thanksgivings past, firefighters have been called out to homes for emergencies like fires started by turkey deep fryers.

“That's something we want people to be cautious about and take extra care. Otherwise, we'll be stopping by someone else's house for Thanksgiving dinner,” Clapper said.

This Thanksgiving, they were able to get through their meal.
