MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -

An Alabama inmate who escaped and raised a family in Michigan before being sent back to prison has died.

The Montgomery Advertiser reports that the state prison system confirmed that Philip Chance died earlier this month.

Chance was convicted of helping his brother and cousin in the murder of 81-year-old storekeeper Walter C. Drinkard in 1972.

Chance, who was 15 at the time, contended he was bullied into making a confession and didn't know his cousin was going to rob and kill the store owner.

He escaped from work release in 1981 after serving nine years of a life sentence. He married, had two daughters and worked a maintenance job in Michigan.

Two Michigan governors denied extradition requests before a federal court ordered Chance returned to Alabama.
