Toys for Tots off to great start

CARROLLTON, MI (WNEM) -

One Mid-Michigan 9-year-old spent Black Friday giving back.

"I've been loading up toys, being with my poppa and helping out," Gillian Heise said.

She and her family lent a hand at the annual Toys for Tots drive at McDonald's in Frankenmuth. It's an event that's been going on for more than 30 years.

The coordinator, Tony D'Anna said they're making great progress.

"[Friday] morning between 6 and 11 we probably picked up about 5,500 toys," D'Anna said.

Once all those items were collected, dozens of volunteers chipped in to load them onto the truck. Then they were shipped off to the VFW in Carrollton.

"It's a little overwhelming and sometimes you have a loss for words, but there's one big thank you," D'Anna said.

D'Anna said he was pleased with the turn out and wants every child to experience the magic of Christmas.

"Who wants a Christmas without something under the tree or something fun," he said.

Toys for Tots is accepting donations through Dec. 23.
