BAY COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

The Tuscola County Prosecutor’s Office has been appointed as a special prosecutor in the case of a local deputy who fired a gun inside a Mid-Michigan school, hitting a teacher in the neck.

It happened at Bay City Western High School in Auburn on Nov. 11.

Police said the school resource officer, Bay County Sheriff's Deputy Adam Brown, was working inside of a room alone when his gun went off unintentionally.

The bullet went through a wall into a classroom and struck a teacher in the neck, Michigan State Police Lt. Dave Kaiser said.

The teacher wasn’t hurt because the bullet lost all of its momentum going through the wall, according to police.

A 13-year-old student who was in the classroom at the time talked to TV5 about the experience, read about it here.

It’s still not clear what caused the weapon to be fired.

Tuscola County Prosecutor Mark Reene said his office is reviewing the reports and will go through the material thoroughly.
