The former leader of a Detroit suburb has been indicted on corruption charges in a federal investigation of local government in Macomb County.

The indictment against Michael Lovelock replaces a criminal complaint that was filed on Nov. 17. He's accused of accepting $30,000 in bribes from a company that was doing business with Chesterfield Township.

As supervisor, Lovelock was the highest-ranking elected official in the township of more than 40,000 residents. He lost a re-election bid on Nov. 8, a week before his arrest.

A message seeking comment was left with his attorney Thursday.

So far, three people in three townships have been charged in the investigation. The FBI says the corruption is "systemic."

Chesterfield's new supervisor says he's going through the files of the former administration.
