VASSAR, MI (WNEM) -

A Mid-Michigan town is seeing a major boom in new business and it's sparking a lot of optimism around the area.

Seven new businesses opened up this year in downtown Vassar.

Darren Drew opened up Sam and Ruby's the Corner Deli-Cafe with his sister. They served their first meal about a month ago.

"It's a great town with a great tradition of people," Drew said.

Right down the street from there the Sambuca Cafe serves up specialty coffee and features a different food menu.

"We won best gluten free restaurant-cafe in the state of Michigan," said Katy Derscha, owner.

Across the street from the Sambuca is the Riverside Grill. Krystal Long used to work in the former restaurant located there. She always wanted to own her own place so she started serving this year.

"Our specialty is I think our burgers. There's eight different hand crafted burgers," Long said.

If you're looking for accessories or home decor you'll want to check out Rebel Soul.

"I'm kind of a mix between bohemian gypsy, country, rustic, everything. So you can find a gift when you come in here pretty easily," Star Filkins said.

Vassar City Manager Brian Chapman is thrilled that the businesses are helping pump up his town's economy.

"A lot of the business owners are working with one another to self-promote and really try to encourage more foot traffic in the downtown," Chapman said.

Betty Burley recently opened Candyland Ice Cream and Gifts. She is also the director of the Vassar Chamber of Commerce.

"Everybody's working. It's not just the new businesses, but it's the old businesses too that have been here and everybody seems to work together," Burley said.

Another reason businesses set up shop here is because it's between Millington and Frankenmuth, meaning businesses can reach folks from all three communities.

Other new businesses include classes for ballet, tap and jazz, and a bakery. Which makes the Tuscola County town a destination for shopping and dining in the Thumb.
