GRAND BLANC, MI (WNEM) -

A Mid-Michigan high school is getting recognized for one of their programs, which is considered one of the best in the country.

"It is so cool to see everybody lined up and they will be late to class. They are all lined up to get their yearbook," said Ava Butzu, yearbook teacher at Grand Blanc High School.

The yearbook at the school is still quite a hit because it is much more than portraits and quotes.

Butzu said their goal is to tell a story about who the students truly are. Their hard work has paid off because they won the Columbia Press Association's Crown Award.

"When you win a crown people joke how it makes you royalty in the publication, in scholastic publication. But because we were the only book in the state of Michigan that won this year, it was a super honor for us," Butzu said.

The Crown Award is based on excellence in design, concept, coverage and writing skills. The students spend all year cultivating stories within their student population and designing it.

The yearbook has four different parts which includes everything from sports coverage to academics. The students who work on the yearbook said it's nice to be recognized for their hard work.

"It means that everything pays off eventually and you make it through. You prosper through the bad times. It means they were all worth it in the end," said Zapporah Tuner, student.

Butzu said she hopes this class will give her students skills they can take with them for the rest of their lives.

"And to see the world outside of their own little bubble and to see the world. And all of the stories happening have value and we should be curious about them," Butzu said.

The school also received a Crown Award in 2012.
