GENESEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

One Mid-Michigan high school is going the extra mile to give back to as many people as they can this holiday season.

Students at Swartz Creek Academy launched a new program of giving and are currently holding four donation drives.

"We have a drive for our veterans. We do many different activities for our homeless veterans with socks, gloves, hats and mittens. We also have a drive for our food bank that they can bring in different foods. And we have another drive that is for slightly used toys that they're going to give. And then they're going to make doggy blankets with repurposed blankets on that," said Richard Thompson, dean of students.

Each drive runs through Dec. 21 and the students said causes like this are an important part of education.

"We don't want to just take everything without giving. It's wrong and it's the giving time of year. So let's do something to give back," said Dominic McMorris, junior.

There's even one senior who branched out to form a drive of her own. Destinee Mockles is hand crocheting stuffed animals to assist in the toy drive for young children.

"I thought it was nice to have a yarn drive to get extra yarn and the eyes and stuff and more needles and stuff like that so I can do it," Mockles said.

Thompson said the conscious act of giving is what an education is all about.

"Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country. And that's what these students are all about through this holiday season," Thompson said.
