Sleepy drivers are as dangerous as drunk drivers--AAA

A new study from AAA details just how dangerous driving sleep-deprived can be.  The study says drivers are nearly twice as likely to be involved in an accident if they sleep five to six hours rather than eight or more.  Drivers who sleep between four and five hours in a 24-hour period are four times more likely to be involved in an accident.  Drivers who sleep less than four hours are 12 times more likely to crash. 

“Driving with less than four hours of sleep can be just as impairing as driving legally drunk,” said AAA’s traffic safety director Jake Nelson.

Mid-Michigan trucker Ed Garrison says all the training in the world does’t do any good if you ignore your body.  “The time change really got to me in the spring.  Losing and hour of sleep took a while to recover from.”

“There’s a lot of new drivers out here who don’t get paid a lot and they want to make better money so they keep driving when they should be sleeping,” said Mid-Michigan trucker Tony Morris.

The bottom line, says AAA, is that sleep deprivation can kill.
