A local organization is working to make sure those struggling with their health don't miss our on the joyous season.

The festive sounds of Christmas carols filled the halls at Genesys Ascension Healthcare.

Cindy Ficorelli, public relations specialist, said the facility works hard to create the atmosphere for the holidays.

"It's so cool to see the visitors come in and they walk in and they think they're going to see a hospital setting and they see the beautiful 25 foot poinsettia tree and they see high school students singing music," Ficorelli said.

For nearly 20 years Genesys Ascension has invited area high schools to perform for patients and visitors in the lobby. If a patient or staff member is unable to attend the live performances, Ficorelli said they're sure to capture the holiday spirit.

"We tape them and we run them in the patient bedrooms throughout the holidays so they have a little bit of joy and can enjoy music throughout the holidays," Ficorelli said.

Participants said they're more than happy to lend something as simple as their voice.

"Sometimes you can't have the opportunity to have someone in your room, but it's nice to hear a performance and take your mind away from things for awhile and just listen to some nice music," said Jennifer Orkisz, Davison High School choir teacher.

Her students agree. They said it's a wonderful opportunity while doing something they love.

"I think it's really cool to get out here and spread good vibes. Happiness is the best medicine," said Tristram Shayna, junior at Davison High School.
