Even those who help others need a little help of their own sometimes.

A local food pantry was in desperate need of some equipment so it can continue to cater to those in need through the holiday season.

The Pinconning Area Emergency Food Pantry had an emergency of its own. It was in need of a working refrigerator and the problem came during one of the busiest times of the year.

"The refrigerator just is old. It's 40-years-old and it's not working as it should be," said Sandy Augustyniak, with the food pantry.

Workers at the pantry said their refrigerator is on its last leg and without a working fridge the pantry wouldn't be able to store basic groceries like eggs or milk.

"On average we serve around 100 families per month, which is a lot that goes through this pantry. So we really need a new refrigerator," said Judy Fenwick, pantry trustee.

Workers have been storing perishable foods in the United Methodist Church kitchen to get by, but that would not have lasted forever.

"We have gotten quotes on brand new refrigerators and they range anywhere from $500 up to $700. So it's kind of costly for us to have to put out that money when we require that money to give to families that are in need in this area," said Lori Adcock, pantry trustee.

After seeing the pantry's story, Scott Mackenzie - owner of Millar's Appliance Store in Bay City - teamed up with Pinconning Police Sgt. Terry Spencer to donate a brand new refrigerator to the pantry.

"The food pantry does a lot of good for the community. They get a lot of the basic essentials that we take for granted every day, so it's good to help those who help others," Spencer said.

The food pantry was happy with the outcome.

"I was just ecstatic. I just couldn't believe it," said Cookie Bumgarner, treasurer of the food pantry.
