Thousands of tourists and millions of dollars are headed Mid-Michigan's way in a few years.

"This year I am pleased to announce that in 2019 the regional championships are coming to Saginaw, Michigan," said Tom Faro, with the Michigan State Youth Soccer.

About 12,000 spectators and an estimated $12 million are headed to the Saginaw area.

The Saginaw Township Soccer Complex will host more than 200 boys and girls soccer teams from 14 states, all vying to take the top spot in the regional championship games.

"With people frequenting obviously the hotels, restaurants, shopping, vacationing before and after the event. It's going to be an economic boost for the community, but it's also going to boost tourism," Faro said.

Saginaw Township first hosted the regional championship games in 2012. Organizers said they've taken the lessons learned from that tournament and took input from local businesses to help make things even better for the five day tournament this time around.

Officials said one of the reasons the Saginaw Township Soccer Complex was picked out of the 14 states participating is because of its 21 soccer fields.

"We're very, very proud that our complex and Saginaw Township and greater Saginaw and the region has once again been selected," Saginaw Township Supervisor Tim Braun said.
