TAYMOUTH TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

They say a dog is man's best friend and that holds true for one Mid-Michigan man.

Thanks to his canine companion he received help after he fell and could not get up.

Sheriff Federspiel told TV5 that Frank Gnatkowski, 75, was riding his four-wheeler in the woods in Taymouth Township Thursday morning. The vehicle broke down and Gnatkowski decided to walk back.

During that walk he fell and hurt his back and was unable to move, said Lt. Mike Gomez, with the Saginaw County Sheriff's Department.

The man's dog stayed by his side to keep him warm, while barking for help. The dog's bark is what alerted a neighbor to call 911, Gomez said.

Rescue workers used ATVs to rescue the man.

He was taken to St. Mary's Hospital where his condition is unknown.
