Flint Township looks at changing name

Flint Township stands alone from Flint. The two have separate governments and taxes, but they share a name.

The name is something Morley Biesman claims is costly.

"My house is now worth $130,000 and two years ago it was a little over $300,000. It's the association with Flint, that's a big part of it," the Flint Township resident said.

Biesman has lived in the township for a while and in 1985 proposed the township change its name. On Thursday he pushed for the same thing, with dozens of others backing him at Flint Township Hall.

As part of the suggestion committee, the group explored township options.

"Whether it's the water crisis or garbage pickup or anything else, weather warning or what have you. Flint Township is confused and it's not clear to people so they'd like to look at the possibility of a name change," said Jerry Preston, suggestion committee chair.

Flint and Flint Township also share several zip codes and the mailing addresses for them just read Flint. A simple name change will not mean a change in mailing address. However, the committee is looking into the possibility of turning Flint Township into its own city, hoping to change that.

"I've been wanting Flint Township to change. I've been wanting a new identity, I guess that's what it is," said Bea Reed, resident.

A similar situation happened in Oakland County's Pontiac Township, which is now Auburn Hills. Some residents think a new identity will serve their community best.

"The name Flint is like a stigma," said Morley Biesman, resident.

A potential name change is still very much in its infancy stage. There's still a lot they have to look at before they make that decision, but some people said it's worthwhile to look at the possibility.
