MIDLAND COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A local pet shelter is hoping people can find it in their hearts to help out some little paws.

The shelter hopes to set up a sanctuary for homeless animals, especially those with special needs.

"They're awesome. You know they take in kitties, kitties that will never be adopted," Karen Gates said.

She is passionate about saving animals and organizations like Smart Paws that are dedicated to the cause. Smart Paws is a new animal rescue focused on fostering special needs animals.

"We get requests to take animals at least weekly," said Anke Schwenk, vice president of the organization.

The organization is hoping to raise funds for a pet sanctuary in Midland.

"We have a wonderful shelter. We have great rescues, but we're lacking a sanctuary so that's our main focus right now," said Sylvia Gilvydis, president of the organization.
