Mid-Michigan is losing one of its biggest winter festivals next year and the roar of snowmobile racing will be silenced as well.

The Caro Winter Fest and snowmobile races have been canceled for 2017. It's unclear if it will ever return.

"It's depressing. It's a little discouraging, I guess," said Colleen Woolsworth, Caro resident.

Preparations are usually underway this time of year at the Tuscola County Fairgrounds, but this is the first time in nine years the winter festival won't happen.

"They're always a blast. I know we usually have a huge turnout every year. It brings in a lot of business for all of these smaller restaurants," Woolsworth said.

Organizers said the event, originally scheduled for Jan. 19-21, has been canceled.

The company that specializes in the snowmobile racing aspect of the festival pulled out. Festival organizers felt without that event the festival would not be successful, so they pulled the plug completely.

"A lot of businesses will take a loss. Hotels, things like that will take a big loss. Which is unfortunate. Restaurants and the smaller businesses are definitely going to take a hit from this," Woolsworth said.
