A fire at a local assisted living facility resulted in the death of one of its residents.

Saginaw Township fire officials said it happened Tuesday night about 8:30 at the Brookdale Assisted Living facility on McCarty Road in Saginaw Township.

The fire was contained to a single room, which the sprinkler system extinguished.

However, a person in that room died as a result of the fire. The victim was a 98-year-old female who was in the memory care facility. She was in bed at the time of the fire, Saginaw Township Police Chief Jim Peterson said.

The cause of the fire is unclear at this time. The fire remains under investigation by the state.

The apartment complex released the following statement:

Late Tuesday evening, there was a fire in an apartment. The local fire department arrived and quickly put out the fire.  We are saddened to confirm a resident sustained fatal injuries. Our hearts are broken by this loss. We cannot provide any further information at this time.

The fire department responded and required us to evacuate the building. The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time. We are working closely with fire officials.

Those residents who were displaced due to the fire and water damage are being relocated to other living spaces. We are grateful to our associates who responded quickly and assisted residents to exit from the building safely.
