As the deep freeze settles in, many Mid-Michigan residents are firing up their furnaces.

As the temperatures plunge, plenty of people realize their furnace needs to be fixed.

"When you notice it and you see the temps dropping you have to get it done as soon as possible," said Amanda Mersereau-Kempf, had a broken furnace.

With a 6-year-old in the house she knew she needed to act fast. She put out a call for service and John Huntley was there to answer it. He's a service tech for Answer Heating and Cooling. He said Wednesday was a busy day.

"A lot of furnaces that have been struggling through the mild conditions are not making it through the cold temperatures," Huntley said.

He said age caught up with Kempf's furnace. The fan inside had to be replaced to push the air through her house.

"Since it got cold everybody is running their equipment now. So all your problems are popping up now," Huntley said.

He said preventative maintenance on your furnace is important, including a yearly checkup.

"Filters the biggest thing. If you have a side wall vented furnace, make sure that snow is removed from the outside so you don't get blockage. We get quite a few calls for that. Batteries on thermostats, make sure those are charged annually because if you have bad batteries they may not work on the thermostat," Huntley said.
