FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

The bitter cold temperatures is making one drive even more urgent as it works to warm up those in need.

To most people, David Hynds is considered homeless. But to him, and many others in Flint, places like the Carriage Town Ministries provide everything they need in a home - a hot meal and a warm bed.

Those beds are kept warm thanks in part to County Commissioner Brenda Clack's annual blanket drive.

"Asking the community for blankets for those who need it so dearly. We assume that everyone has blankets and they're warm. It's a bad assumption, especially in Genesee County," Clack said.

This is the 16th year for the blanket drive.

"The idea came about when I encountered a homeless person on the streets of Flint and my husband and I bought blankets and we gave these blankets out one Christmas Eve. And I couldn't believe when he asked me, 'Are you really going to give me a new blanket,'" Clack said.

The blankets are dispersed throughout different organizations in Genesee County.

"We are so thankful for Brenda and the generosity of the community. It really means a lot. We have a lot of people coming to Carriage Town Ministries seeking a clean, safe and encouraging place. And during this time when it's really cold, offering them a warm place to be with a new warm blanket, that's great," said Emily Rossmaessler, development director for Carriage Town Ministries.

The Wrap for Warmth Blanket Drive ends Dec. 16, but Clack urges residents to do what they can.

"There's a huge box in our lobby of the commissioner's office and all you have to do is come and drop the blankets off. You can also drop them off on my porch. It doesn't matter," she said.
