SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Phones have been ringing off the hook for towing companies so far this winter.

"This is our season. Winter is where the tow trucks make our business. So for us, today was a good day," said Steve Fresorger, office manager at Kreager Towing.

Fresorger said by 5 p.m. on Thursday they already received 140 calls, much more than normal.

"Lot of jump starts cause of cold weather. People finding out their battery is weak and we have to go jump start them. Other electrical issues and other tires blow out on them," he said.

Jim Wilson, a tow tuck driver for the company, said the job takes a toll when it's this cold outside. He said the key to working in freezing temperatures is to add on the layers.

"It's what my grandmother told me. I can take it off if I got too much on, but I can't put it on if I don't have it with me," Wilson said.

Fresorger wants to remind drivers to take it slow and be mindful of the weather conditions before you head out the door.
