MICHIGAN, (WNEM) -

A bill designed to place animal abusers on a statewide registry list is now headed to the governor’s desk.

After six years of work, "Logan's Law" officially passed the Michigan House and Senate early Thursday morning.

The new laws will restrict current and future ownership of pets by those convicted of certain animal cruelty crimes. It also mandates that shelters perform background checks on potential adopters.

The law is named after a Siberian husky named Logan who was attacked in March of 2012 in his own back yard by a person with acid. ?
