GRAND BLANC, MI (WNEM) -

From icy interstate pileups to hypothermia, frostbite and recreational safety, the trauma department at Genesys Hospital has its hands full this time of year.

While a slip and fall may not sound so bad, the resulting injury can be severe depending on your age.

"As we get older we see a lot of fractured hips, fractured femurs and traumatic brain injuries are pretty common," said Zachary Landers, trauma program manager at the hospital.

Every year there are instances where someone who has been mostly inactive will go out and perform a strenuous activity like shoveling snow. For some, those injuries have resulted in a heart attack and have been deadly.

Genesys hasn't seen such a case this year, but two men did die in metro Detroit last weekend while snowblowing.

"We recommend hiring out snow shoveling. Have someone plow your driveway for you," Landers said.

If you are shoveling snow and you have chest pains or numbness seek emergency care immediately.
