BURTON, MI (WNEM) -

Two people were killed over the weekend in a house fire in Burton.

It happened about 10:30 a.m. Sunday in the 6200 block of Atherton Road.

Investigators said the bodies of Richard Lynn, 76, and Ellen Lynn, 73, were found inside the home once the flames were put out. Authorities said they were killed by smoke inhalation.

"We believe it started in the kitchen with the stove. We believe they could have been trying to heat the house with the stove," Fire Chief Marvin Epperson said.

Firefighters said there were flammable objects nearby that likely contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.

Harold Neitzke lives down the road from where the fire happened.

"We went to church about 9:30. We came home about 1 and all we saw were three firetrucks down there," Neitzke said. "The firemen had everything out before we even arrived home. It was just a few hours."
