Bitter cold is the best way to describe the week's weather, and it's been a miserable one if you don't have heat in your home.

"It's going to be freezing cold! Even tonight it's going down in the negatives and its not even January yet," said Mary Domino.

Domino knows too well that heat is not a luxury, but rather a necessity in the winter months. When the forecast in Saginaw is expected to fall below zero, it presents a much bigger problem for her now that her furnace stopped working.

"Financially I can't afford it. Financially there is no extra money. I've tried getting help from the government and local people. There's nothing out there," Domino said.

Domino is disabled and lives with her son. She has been hanging blankets from the ceilings just to try to keep the heat in. All she had to heat her home was a  small space heater. That is until she reached out to the TV5 Rescue Squad about her broken furnace.

"It's so old they are not able to fix it. It would cost just as much to fix it. It would be cheaper to get a new one, she said.

The people at Sol-Air Heating and Air Conditioning decided to lend a hand in the form of a brand new furnace free of charge.

"Something like this, I can feel like I gave back to the community. Because I've been here for 45 years and the community has been good to me," said Butch Shinkel, owner of the heating business.

Shinkel also learned Domino was behind on her property taxes so he loaned her the money to stave off potential foreclosure on her home.

"I didn't want her to lose the house after I had just put a new furnace in it," he said.

As for Domino, she said she's grateful to Shinkel and everyone else who wanted to help.

"Thank you TV5 for getting it out there, getting my story out there and the wonderful people who were able to help me," Domino said.
