Not too late to avoid paying higher vehicle registration rate

MICHIGAN, (WNEM) -

Get ready to shell out more cash at the Secretary of State's office.

In less than two weeks, it's going to cost more to renew your license plates.

The amount varies depending on what you drive, with electric vehicle owners taking the biggest hit.

The fee hike is part of the billion-dollar Road Funding Bill Governor Snyder signed into law last year.

It goes into effect on January 1 but for some of you, it's not too late to avoid paying the higher rate.

According to the Detroit News, you can renew your registration at the current rate if you do it before the end of the year, including anyone who's registration needs to be renewed in the next six months.

To figure out what you owe, you can use the Registration Fee Lookup on the department of state's website.
