Some are bringing in the new year with champagne and spirits. The Saginaw County Sheriffs department is bringing in 2017 with extra police on the streets.

"We will probably add on 10 to 15 more who will just be looking for bad drivers out there. People out there drinking and driving." said Sgt. Mark Garabelli

We rode along with Sgt. mark Garabelli in Saginaw. He was looking for anyone that may have overindulged. He said it's easy to spot.

"Typical people who are swerving....driving too fast driving too slow typical driving violations not using blinkers." said Sgt. Mark Garabelli

We haven't picked up any drivers so far but it will be a costly start to the new year for anyone caught driving under the influence.

"Ten thousand dollars if you are caught drunk driving with your first offense. In some counties you might even get jail time your first offense." Said Sgt. Mark Garabelli

The Saginaw County Sheriffs Department says that last year there were under 15 drunk driving arrests.

"More people are using designated drivers. and different taxi services or take limousines and stuff." said Sgt. Mark Garabelli

Garabelli says he hopes the extra presence of police on the roads will help keep everyone safe into the new year.

"Our goal is not to arrest people. it's that everyone get's home safe and alive." said Sgt. Mark Garabelli
