A local grocery store employee is being praised as a hero after a customer suddenly collapsed and he jumped into action to save his life.

It happened at Sanford Food Center.

Cameron Haskell is trained in CPR and rushed to help the customer who suffered a heart attack last week.

"He was lying on the ground on his back, flat on his back, purple in the face. He had a pulse and was gasping," Haskell said.

The life and death struggle took place inside the Sanford food store.

Paramedics were on their way and 911 was on the other line, but Haskell was the only hope the man had at that moment. Just before Haskell started chest compressions the man's pulse vanished.

Haskell said he remained calm, knowing he had to keep it together in order to save a life.

"Your gut just drops and you begin CPR. I got him to start gasping again," Haskell said.

Haskell said he was so shaken up by the incident he had to go ahead and take his lunch break to collect himself. He didn't know if the person he helped would live or die.

"When I got back from lunch one of my coworkers let me know he had his pulse back and he was breathing when he left," Haskell said.

Haskell believes the man is recovering at a hospital somewhere.

"Get feeling better," he said.
