A local girl's family is using her cancer diagnosis to raise awareness for other children in the same situation.

"I looked at Chris and he looked at the doctor and he said, 'what are we treating?' And he said, 'you're treating cancer,'" said Danielle Deines, mom.

It is something no child should have to go through.

For 4-year-old Hadlee, it was leukemia.

"Time stops for what feels like a long time," said Chris Deines, dad. "You realize, wow this just happened to our child. And I think both of us were in shock. But at the same time we looked at each other and thought what do we have to do to make this better."

Their answer was Hurley Hospital in Flint. Not only did Hadlee get the treatment she needed, but endless support along the way.

For those reasons, Hadlee is now the face of the Hurley Foundation - the charity that helps fund all the little things for patients.

"Everyone says it was such a sad time that we had to spend Hadlee's third birthday at the hospital," Danielle Deines said. "Hadlee was so excited because she got there and the room was completely decorated in Frozen, her favorite."

Hadlee is in remission, but she is still getting rounds of chemotherapy to ensure the leukemia doesn't come back.

As for the doctors with the tall task of poking and prodding the young cancer patients, they are more than just doctors to Hadlee and her parents.

"You're not just a patient, you're family," Danielle Deines said.

A lot of the little extra things Hurley Hospital does for their patients is made possible by the Hurley Foundation.
