Soup kitchen serves up Thanksgiving meal for hundreds

Posted: Updated:

Addilee Haywood enjoyed a home-cooked Thanksgiving meal on Tuesday.

“I appreciate it and I wish God would bless everything.”

She was just one of hundreds who attended the annual dinner put on by the East Side Soup Kitchen and a host of volunteers.

William Buchinger of the Saginaw Fire Department is part of a team of first responders who took time out of their busy lives to serve food at the Saginaw location.

“When there’s not fires, we look for other things we can do. And so, to be able to do this and serve our community, and give back to the community, that means a lot to us. Just means the world to us.”

Donations to the East Side Soup Kitchen helped make this day possible.

The Saginaw ISD Transitions Center is just one of the organizations that raised money for the feast.

“Our monthly mission this month is gratitude and manners. And what a great way to give back to our community by giving back through our students,” said Trisha Duran.

Dawn Goodrow is Executive Director of the East Side Soup Kitchen. She said the need in the area is great, and help in the form of donations is always appreciated.

“The best donation is always cash. Because we can make that dollar go a long way. And you know we have relationships with people that sell food that we can buy a lot more food.”

Food that helps people like Addilee Haywood have a brighter holiday.

“They do good cooking and everything. It’s great. And I love it.”
