A man is dead and a suspect has been charged after a shooting in Saginaw.

It happened about 10 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5 on the 2400 block of Collingwood.

Michigan State Police said when troopers arrived they found 43-year-old Shermein Delmont Cooper, of Saginaw, dead from a gunshot wound.

Alvin Stephenson III was arraigned on charges of open murder, felon in possession of a firearm and two counts of felony firearm on Friday.

A vigil was held for Cooper outside his Saginaw home on Friday.

His mother Theresa Cooper said her son was a beloved person whose life had taken a turn for the better.

"Never bothered anyone. He had changed his life and started going to church," she said. "My son was the father of 20-something children and they're going to miss their father."

This is the 13th homicide in the city of Saginaw this year, police said.
