Cops, churches go head-to-head in basketball game

Local law enforcement and churches went head-to-head on the hardwood, but the cause they played for was bigger than a trophy.

"I just like the overall support for the people," said Leshonda Wilson.

Wilson came out to the first annual "Cops in the Church Christmas." She said the event has food, activities and even a charity basketball game between members of local churches and Mid-Michigan's finest.

"I came to support my church. I also came because my son wants to be a policeman and I want to show him that he could be whatever he wants to be," said Wilson.

Wilson's son Josh says when he grows up  He's going to be a tough of crime kind of cop.

"I would like to take people to jail," said Josh Wilson.

Josh and hundreds of other children gathered at the Buena Vista community center to have a fun filled day. Kentrez Frazier decided to help host the event because he feels it's important to give back to his community.

"Show the kids at someone cares. We’re not just out here and law-enforcement is not just out here beating the streets or picking on people they actually are out here because they care," said Frazier.

The fun-filled day included a bounce house and multiple free giveaways. 15 kids even received a $100 dollar gift card to shop with a local officer. Sergeant Russ Pahssen with Buena Vista police came to play ball and get to know some local children.

"Get a good sense of the holidays and feel good about themselves. Watching the game watching the cops just interact with everybody. " said Sgt. Pahssen.

Wilson hopes this helps  bridge the gap between the next generation and law enforcement.

“There are good people in the world it’s not filled with just the bad,” said Wilson.
