(Meredith) – Police arrested a Georgia man who allegedly spanked a stranger’s 2-year-old son at a grocery store.

James Morris said he and his son were standing in the self-checkout line at a Kroger on Tuesday when the boy asked for a candy bar, the Newman Times-Herald reports.

Shortly after, a man who smelled strongly of alcohol grabbed the boy by his arm and hit him three times on his bottom, according to a police report obtained by the newspaper.

The suspect, who police identified as 62-year-old Juan Guvarra Martinez, also acted erratically when a cop tried to handcuff him following the incident.

Officers escorted him out the building and when they made it to the patrol car, Martinez started kicking the doors and windows, the Times-Herald reports.

Martinez is now charged with simple battery, child cruelty, disorderly conduct, and obstruction to officers, according to the Coweta County Sheriff's Office.

The 62-year-old cannot return to Kroger when he is released from jail.

His next court date is Feb. 15.
