(Meredith) – A heartbreaking video shows the moment a group of strangers found a 9-month-old baby crawling across a busy street in upstate New York.

In the video posted to Facebook, several people rushed to help the crying infant who had been left alone on the freezing asphalt Friday night. A good Samaritan comforted the child and another called 911.

“That’s what people do now? Leave their kids in the street,” said the man recording the video.

Near the end of the minute-long clip a woman can be heard shouting in the background: “That’s my baby. That’s my baby. Oh my God. Oh my God.”

The Utica Police Department identified that woman as 27-year-old Ledrika E. Ford, who claimed she didn’t know how her baby ended up in the street.

Ford told investigators she and a relative secured the child in the back seat of a car, started driving and a “short time later” realized the child was no longer in the vehicle.

She said they returned to where they were initially parked and found the baby with strangers.

Ford is now charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Authorities also notified Child Protective Services which removed four kids from her custody.

In a statement, the police department thanked those who rescued the child.

“The Utica Police Department would like to thank the citizens in the video who attended to the child showing their caring and compassionate spirit of the City of Utica,” the department wrote.
