IOSCO COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Authorities say they have found the remains of an elderly man and his dog after an Iosco County house fire.

The fire happened about 8 a.m. on the 800 block of Duby Road outside of Tawas City in Alabaster Township.

When firefighters arrived, they found the house fully engulfed.

"Upon arrival, flames were exiting the building through the roof and the windows," Tawas Fire Chief Steve Masich said.

Investigators were at the scene putting out "hot spots" hours later. Large clouds of dark smoke could be seen from miles away.

Firefighters searched several hours for a man who lived inside the home. Unfortunately, both he and his dog were found deceased. The man has been identified as 74-year-old Edward J. Albert.

Masich said it took three fire departments to shuttle enough water to extinguish the 1,400 square foot home.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
