Teen on the autism spectrum plans to climb Mount St. Helens

SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

A Mid-Michigan high school student plans to tackle a huge challenge climbing Mount St. Helens in Oregon.

What makes this story even more challenging is that he is on the autism spectrum, but this is more than just a physical challenge he’s setting for himself.

“I am a little scared, but I’m going to do it anyways,” said Connor Good.

Connor is a senior in high school and like most students he’s making plans for his future.

But before college comes something a little more adventurous. He wants to climb Mount St Helens.

“I went out to Portland, Oregon to see my dad and my dad introduced me to mountain climbing,” Connor said.

Climbing a mountain is a huge undertaking for anyone, but for Connor it’s a chance at a future.

Connor has autism and would like to attend a specialized program for young adults on the autism spectrum at Calvin College.

“It’s called Ready for Life, it’s a fully inclusive transition for students on the autism spectrum, unfortunately those programs come with a really high price tag,” said Becky Barror, Connor’s mother.

And because you don’t end up with a college degree at the end of the program, Connor isn’t eligible for student loans.

So to raise money, his family created Connor Conquering Mountains.

“This would be a great way to raise awareness, also to show the abilities of people on the spectrum and then potentially to raise funds if in fact Connor ends up going to this specialty program,” Barror said.

Voted most inspirational by his peers here at Heritage High School, Connor said he wants to make a difference, but now just for himself.

“There’s not very many programs for kids with autism and the ones that are out there are very expensive so I’m doing this to help raise awareness,” Connor said.

One more thing Connor is looking forward to as he gets ready to embark on the next chapter of his life

“It’s gonna be nice to not have my parents telling me what to do,” Connor said.

The St Helens climb will be June 21 and if you want to help Connor raise money, you can visit his GoFundMe page.
