GM named as company behind potential development

BURTON, MI (WNEM) -

Local leaders are naming General Motors as the company behind a massive industrial development in Burton.

The area near Genesee and Davison Roads was bought by a Missouri-based company with the potential for becoming a new GM facility, but it isn’t a done deal just yet.

“I can’t even tell you the words of how excited we are for the trickle down that would happen if they chose us,” said Burton Mayor Paula Zelenko.

Zelenko has fingers crossed that a new GM facility will be built in her city.

Burton has been in talks with GM for months but have had to remain silent on the potential deal.

But GM is now officially confirming their work on a tax abatement plan for the new facility.

Zelenko is eager to share the news with her community.

“I can see us bringing back to the days of where we were booming and we had those mom and pop businesses and then those facilities that might feed parts and things to General Motors,” Zelenko said.

Though nothing’s been finalized yet, businesses and residents are also optimistic about the change a new facility could bring.

Mayor Zelenko also said that Burton residents will get a chance to share their thoughts on potential tax breaks for GM at a public meeting on May 7.

“They’ll have a public hearing at 6 p.m., you know for the tax abatement and avocation and then council may be able to act as soon as that evening,” Zelenko said.
