SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

It's the drop-off spot where pets and strays await adoption, but the people who run a shelter say they need a new facility to do right by the animals there.

Animal lovers roared with applause Tuesday night after commissioners approved the renewal and increase of a millage for Saginaw County Animal Care and Control to be on the August ballot.

The project will raise money to build a new animal control center in the same location.

Saginaw Animal Control officers said the current building wasn’t designed for a large operation in mind.

It used to be a Rite Aid, and it’s a struggle to make things work.

“"Last week we had five litters of kittens in every office we have because we have no room for them,” Officer Tricia Barnes said.

The new shelter would cost around $11 million and would bring an additional officer, a clinic and more. The millage would go from charging around $7 per $100,000 home to $20. The expense was concerning for commissioners that voted no.

Commissioner Dennis Krafft said he'd like to see a new facility, he just wants to make sure this is the best way to go about it.

"We saw no budget on what impact that will have on animal care going forward. We saw nothing that says that there isn't a better option or other choices,” Krafft said.

Officers said it'll be worth it and are thankful for a chance on the ballot.

"We've just worked very hard to get where we are. For the commissioners to approve it is pretty cool. These animals they need the best and letting the people decide is what we need to do,” Barnes said.

This was one of four millage issues that passed Tuesday night. The others were for the Commission on Aging, the Castle Museum, and Saginaw County 911. All will be on the August ballot.
