A Michigan woman has been charged with killing her ailing mother by giving her too much pain medication.

Kalamazoo County Sheriff deputies said Susan Kubicek, 50, turned herself in at the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday. She was arraigned on a second-degree murder charge.

Steve Salik, Kubicek's brother, said the charges were expected. He said Kubicek intentionally overdosed their mother on painkillers in May 2017.

Salik said Kubicek was caring for their ailing mother for months before she intentionally overdosed her on pain medication.

"She did something she shouldn't have done and she let people know about it,” Salik said.

Salik said those other people were fellow nurses helping Kubicek care for her mother.

“She had a thyroid removed. She had had 35 radiation treatments and it burned her from her nose to the top of her chest,” Salik said.

He said a coroner ruled his mother's death an intentional overdose in 2017, but police issued a warrant for the arrest of Kubicek late last week.

“It's going to be one of two reasons - they are either going to go for compassion or some other illegal stuff Sue had already done,” Salik said.

He believes his sister deserves the second-degree murder charge.

“You made your bed and now you're going to sleep in it. That's all I can say,” he said.

The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office did confirm the case involves an intentional overdose but couldn’t say much more.

Kubicek is scheduled for a preliminary hearing April 26.
