LAPEER, MI (WNEM) -

A trip to the emergency room can mean hours in a waiting room when you’re feeling at your worst.

One Mid-Michigan hospital is trying to eliminate that painful wait.

“Nobody likes to go to the doctor. Nobody likes to go to the emergency room,” said Betsy Felton, emergency services director for McLaren Lapeer.

Felton said waiting will be a thing of the past, thanks to a new online program.

“Thirty minutes. Even if it’s 10 minutes, 30 minutes is a long time when you don’t feel good or when you’re in pain because you’ve fallen and broken your wrist. That’s a long time to be in pain. So, when you can come back and go directly into a room, that’s what you want,” Felton said.

If you have issues like the flu, a sprained wrist or a sinus infection, you can simply go to McLaren’s website to make an appointment. You type in your patient information, describe the problem and choose a time to go in.

Instead of spending your time in a waiting room with other sick patients, you can spend it at home until your appointment time.

Felton said that is especially important during flu season.

“So, if I don’t have to expose myself or the patients don’t have to be exposed to something like that, they can make that appointment, come in and go directly into a room and get prompt quick care. It’s a win, win for both people,” Felton said.

In their first week of service the program has already been used by 10 patients. The response is overwhelming because no one likes to wait.

“Every one of them has said, ‘this has been fantastic. No wait time. Wow, I didn’t believe it could be this great.’ So, we’re pretty excited about it and excited for the patients that get to use this,” Felton said.

The McLaren Bay Region as well as the Central Michigan and Flint locations offer the online service as well.
