SHIAWASSEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Earth day celebrations kicked off around the world with people taking action to make our planet a better place to live environmentally and the early start didn’t stop people around Mid-Michigan.

The Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge hosted an Earth Day Clean Up event to clean up trash.

The refuge acts as a natural filtration system to contaminants in the water but one of the many challenges of managing wetlands is dealing with trash and water pollution.

“The flood waters brought in a lot debris so this is a great way to get started on the spring season so people can come out and enjoy the refuge and not have a lot of garbage laying around,” said Panela Repp, the Refuge Manager at Shiawassee National Wildlife Refugee

The event lasted from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
