FENTON, MI (WNEM) -

A dog is getting a second chance at a good life after someone shot him and left him for dead.

His journey back from the brink is going to cost money and his life won’t be the same once he recovers.

“He was shot in his left leg. It has been a while because his leg muscle has completely atrophied,” said Jody Maddock, program director of Adopt-a-Pet in Fenton.

Maddock helped save 5-year-old Cassius’ life.

Animal control found Cassius last week with a severe gunshot wound. His injured arm had gotten so infected and had to be amputated right away.

“The bullet shattered his arm, completely shattered the forearm. There was bullet fragments everywhere,” Maddock said.

Maddock said Cassius was found in the Flint area. She said it remains a mystery who shot him and why.

“I don’t know. I wish they could tell us, but then again in situations like this we can’t focus on what happened.  We have to focus on his future,” Maddock said.

It took the vet and animal care workers days to get him back on his feet.

“They see a face like this and they hear a story like this. They come together, people start canceling their plans. We did what needed to be done,” Maddock said.

The medical attention Cassius needed was not cheap. Maddock is now hoping to raise money to cover some of the expenses, but above all she wants him to find a loving home with no more suffering.

Cassius still has a long road to recovery. He has to go through heartworm treatment and he has to get neutered. Once that is over he will be up for adoption in just a few short months.
