Hundreds of new jobs are heading to Tawas.

The move comes after Plastic Trim announced a $16.1 million expansion and technology upgrade at their Baldwin Township, Iosco County plant.

"We're very excited to bring this investment to Tawas," said John Zanti, senior plant manager of MINTH - Plastic Trim International's parent company.

Plastic Trim makes trim, molding decorative parts, body parts and frame systems, among other things, for some of the world’s biggest automakers, including GM, Chrysler, Volkswagen, Nissan and BMW.

Zanti said the investment will not only bring economic development to the area, but will also create 210 jobs.

"The project will be completed on February of next year. So we'll start hiring a few months before the paint line is completed," Zanti said.

He said there will be several new manufacturing and engineering jobs available to the people in Iosco County.

"From engineering we need paint and engineers, quality engineers, maintenance tech, paint line and then a lot of indirect labor. So white collar and blue collar," Zanti said.

Starting wages for the new 210 jobs will be $24 an hour.

“This project will increase the skills of the current workforce, train new hires in the skilled trades, and have a significant impact on the community," said Mark Berdan, executive director, Michigan Works! Region 7B.

The impact this will have on the community is not lost on Zanti, especially considering the area's almost 10 percent unemployment rate.

"Yeah, I think it's great for the community. We're excited for the community and we hope that we can elevate our current staff and bring on a lot of new people," Zanti said.
